As one of its signature thrusts, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has committed to research and appreciation of the relationship between energy and the environment. As part of the Lally Innovation Series, this panel discussion explored innovation in the distribution of electricity--the key source of energy in the modern economy.
In New York, the nonprofit New York Independent Service Operator (NYISO) manages the state’s electricity transmission grid – a 10,775-mile network of high-voltage lines that carry electricity throughout the state to 19.2 million New Yorkers. It also manages the financial market governing the wholesale distribution of electricity throughout the state, where more than $50 billion has been transacted since 1999. Lally Finance Professor John Teall and Rana Mukerji, NYISO VP of Market Structures, hosted a panel of experts discussing innovation in the market for electricity: its features, its pros and cons, and possible long-term implications for the industry, for industrial and residential consumers, and for the future of energy.
